Gluten-free BBQ pork recipe – Cantonese Roasted Meat {Char si}

Growing up in Hong Kong meant a lot of BBQ pork, roasted duck, and soy sauce chicken; it’s just a part of life. You can find a BBQ store on almost every corner in every neighborhood there. It’s so convenient, and people love to buy it for lunch or dinner, or anytime. Once you prepare the BBQ pork, your dinner is half way there. Then just make some rice, cook some vegetables and get ready to serve a happy family meal.

Regular BBQ pork contains gluten (from soy sauce and other sauces). So I started making it a few years ago and tested different recipes. I love it, and my family can’t get enough of it. Very tasty! Enjoy…

Gluten-free BBQ pork recipe

1 pound pork tenderloin
2 tablespoons of chopped garlic
1 tablespoon honey
2 tablespoons hoisin sauce (gluten free)
2 tablespoons soy sauce (gluten free)
1 tablespoon rice wine
⅛ teaspoon white pepper powder

2 tablespoons beet juice or few drops red coloring (optional)
½ teaspoon five-spice powder
1 tablespoon cooking oil
2 tablespoons honey

Put the garlic, honey, hoisin sauce, soy sauce, rice wine, white pepper powder, five-spice powder and beet juice or few drops of red color (optional) in a mixing bowl. Mix well. Put pork tenderloin in the bowl, coat well and marinate for 4 hours or overnight in the refrigerator.

Preheat the oven to 350°F. Bake for 20 minutes or until the internal temperature of the meat reaches 140°F. Take meat out and brush with cooking oil, then honey.

Preheat the broiler and broil the meat for 3-5 minutes, until charred. Turn the meat over and brush with cooking oil, then honey, broil until charred. Take meat out, rest for 5-10 minutes before slicing.
